How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 9 = 2.07
- Check: Work backwards: 2.07 ÷ 9 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/9, so part = 23 × 9 ÷ 100 = 2.07. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.07 is the 23% share of 9. The remaining 77% is 6.93, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $9 saves $2.07, so you pay $6.93.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 9 by 23% gives 11.07 and decreasing it by 23% gives 6.93. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 8.5239, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
