How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 1000 = 700
  3. Check: Work backwards: 700 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/1000, so part = 70 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 700. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

700 is the 70% share of 1000. The remaining 30% is 300, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $1,000 saves $700, so you pay $300.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 1000 by 70% gives 1,700 and decreasing it by 70% gives 300. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 510, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 70. 70% of 1000 and 1000% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 700), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
