How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 1000 = 500
  3. Check: Work backwards: 500 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/1000, so part = 50 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 500. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

500 is the 50% share of 1000. The remaining 50% is 500, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $1,000 saves $500, so you pay $500.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 1000 by 50% gives 1,500 and decreasing it by 50% gives 500. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 750, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 50. 50% of 1000 and 1000% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 500), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
