How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 280 = 70
- Check: Work backwards: 70 ÷ 280 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/280, so part = 25 × 280 ÷ 100 = 70. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*280. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
70 is the 25% share of 280. The remaining 75% is 210, and the two parts add back up to 280.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $280 saves $70, so you pay $210.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 280 by 25% gives 350 and decreasing it by 25% gives 210. These do not cancel out: raising 280 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 262.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
