How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 29 = 7.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.25 ÷ 29 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/29, so part = 25 × 29 ÷ 100 = 7.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*29. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.25 is the 25% share of 29. The remaining 75% is 21.75, and the two parts add back up to 29.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $29 saves $7.25, so you pay $21.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 29 by 25% gives 36.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 21.75. These do not cancel out: raising 29 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 27.1875, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
