How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 320 = 80
- Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 320 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/320, so part = 25 × 320 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*320. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
80 is the 25% share of 320. The remaining 75% is 240, and the two parts add back up to 320.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $320 saves $80, so you pay $240.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 320 by 25% gives 400 and decreasing it by 25% gives 240. These do not cancel out: raising 320 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 300, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
