How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 52 = 13
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13 ÷ 52 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/52, so part = 25 × 52 ÷ 100 = 13. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13 is the 25% share of 52. The remaining 75% is 39, and the two parts add back up to 52.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $52 saves $13, so you pay $39.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 52 by 25% gives 65 and decreasing it by 25% gives 39. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 48.75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
