How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 25 = 13
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13 ÷ 25 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/25, so part = 52 × 25 ÷ 100 = 13. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13 is the 52% share of 25. The remaining 48% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $25 saves $13, so you pay $12.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 25 by 52% gives 38 and decreasing it by 52% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 18.24, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
