How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 8 = 2
- Check: Work backwards: 2 ÷ 8 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/8, so part = 25 × 8 ÷ 100 = 2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2 is the 25% share of 8. The remaining 75% is 6, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $8 saves $2, so you pay $6.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 8 by 25% gives 10 and decreasing it by 25% gives 6. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 7.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
