How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 25 = 2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2 ÷ 25 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/25, so part = 8 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2 is the 8% share of 25. The remaining 92% is 23, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $25 saves $2, so you pay $23.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 25 by 8% gives 27 and decreasing it by 8% gives 23. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 24.84, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 25% of 8. 8% of 25 and 25% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
