How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 75 = 15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 75 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/75, so part = 20 × 75 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15 is the 20% share of 75. The remaining 80% is 60, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $75 saves $15, so you pay $60.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 75 by 20% gives 90 and decreasing it by 20% gives 60. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 72, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
