How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 88 = 22
- Check: Work backwards: 22 ÷ 88 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/88, so part = 25 × 88 ÷ 100 = 22. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*88. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
22 is the 25% share of 88. The remaining 75% is 66, and the two parts add back up to 88.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $88 saves $22, so you pay $66.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 88 by 25% gives 110 and decreasing it by 25% gives 66. These do not cancel out: raising 88 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 82.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
