How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 88 ÷ 100 = 0.88
  2. Multiply: 0.88 × 25 = 22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22 ÷ 25 × 100 = 88%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 88/100 = part/25, so part = 88 × 25 ÷ 100 = 22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =88%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22 is the 88% share of 25. The remaining 12% is 3, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 88% off an item priced $25 saves $22, so you pay $3.

Adding and taking away 88%

Increasing 25 by 88% gives 47 and decreasing it by 88% gives 3. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 88% and then lowering the result by 88% ends at 5.64, because the second 88% is taken of a bigger number.
