How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 91 = 22.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.75 ÷ 91 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/91, so part = 25 × 91 ÷ 100 = 22.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*91. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.75 is the 25% share of 91. The remaining 75% is 68.25, and the two parts add back up to 91.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $91 saves $22.75, so you pay $68.25.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 91 by 25% gives 113.75 and decreasing it by 25% gives 68.25. These do not cancel out: raising 91 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 85.3125, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
