How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 55 = 22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22 ÷ 55 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/55, so part = 40 × 55 ÷ 100 = 22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22 is the 40% share of 55. The remaining 60% is 33, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $55 saves $22, so you pay $33.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 55 by 40% gives 77 and decreasing it by 40% gives 33. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 46.2, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
