How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 96 = 24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24 ÷ 96 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/96, so part = 25 × 96 ÷ 100 = 24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24 is the 25% share of 96. The remaining 75% is 72, and the two parts add back up to 96.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $96 saves $24, so you pay $72.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 96 by 25% gives 120 and decreasing it by 25% gives 72. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 90, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
