How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 1 = 0.26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.26 ÷ 1 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/1, so part = 26 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.26 is the 26% share of 1. The remaining 74% is 0.74, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $1 saves $0.26, so you pay $0.74.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 1 by 26% gives 1.26 and decreasing it by 26% gives 0.74. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 0.9324, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
