How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 27 ÷ 100 = 0.27
  2. Multiply: 0.27 × 40 = 10.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 27%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 27/100 = part/40, so part = 27 × 40 ÷ 100 = 10.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =27%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.8 is the 27% share of 40. The remaining 73% is 29.2, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 27% off an item priced $40 saves $10.8, so you pay $29.2.

Adding and taking away 27%

Increasing 40 by 27% gives 50.8 and decreasing it by 27% gives 29.2. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 27% and then lowering the result by 27% ends at 37.084, because the second 27% is taken of a bigger number.
