How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
- Multiply: 0.28 × 2 = 0.56
- Check: Work backwards: 0.56 ÷ 2 × 100 = 28%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/2, so part = 28 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.56. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =28%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.56 is the 28% share of 2. The remaining 72% is 1.44, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 28% off an item priced $2 saves $0.56, so you pay $1.44.
Adding and taking away 28%
Increasing 2 by 28% gives 2.56 and decreasing it by 28% gives 1.44. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 1.8432, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 28. 28% of 2 and 2% of 28 are always equal (both are 28 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.56), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
