How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 20 = 5.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/20, so part = 28 × 20 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.6 is the 28% share of 20. The remaining 72% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $20 saves $5.6, so you pay $14.4.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 20 by 28% gives 25.6 and decreasing it by 28% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 18.432, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
