How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 4 = 1.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.12 ÷ 4 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/4, so part = 28 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.12 is the 28% share of 4. The remaining 72% is 2.88, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $4 saves $1.12, so you pay $2.88.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 4 by 28% gives 5.12 and decreasing it by 28% gives 2.88. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 3.6864, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
