How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 55 = 15.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.4 ÷ 55 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/55, so part = 28 × 55 ÷ 100 = 15.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.4 is the 28% share of 55. The remaining 72% is 39.6, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $55 saves $15.4, so you pay $39.6.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 55 by 28% gives 70.4 and decreasing it by 28% gives 39.6. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 50.688, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
