How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 5 = 1.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.45 ÷ 5 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/5, so part = 29 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.45 is the 29% share of 5. The remaining 71% is 3.55, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $5 saves $1.45, so you pay $3.55.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 5 by 29% gives 6.45 and decreasing it by 29% gives 3.55. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 4.5795, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
