How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 9 = 2.61
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.61 ÷ 9 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/9, so part = 29 × 9 ÷ 100 = 2.61. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.61 is the 29% share of 9. The remaining 71% is 6.39, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $9 saves $2.61, so you pay $6.39.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 9 by 29% gives 11.61 and decreasing it by 29% gives 6.39. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 8.2431, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
