How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 39 = 1.17
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.17 ÷ 39 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/39, so part = 3 × 39 ÷ 100 = 1.17. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.17 is the 3% share of 39. The remaining 97% is 37.83, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $39 saves $1.17, so you pay $37.83.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 39 by 3% gives 40.17 and decreasing it by 3% gives 37.83. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 38.9649, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
