How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 50 = 1.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/50, so part = 3 × 50 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.5 is the 3% share of 50. The remaining 97% is 48.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $50 saves $1.5, so you pay $48.5.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 50 by 3% gives 51.5 and decreasing it by 3% gives 48.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 49.955, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
