How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 52 = 1.56
- Check: Work backwards: 1.56 ÷ 52 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/52, so part = 3 × 52 ÷ 100 = 1.56. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.56 is the 3% share of 52. The remaining 97% is 50.44, and the two parts add back up to 52.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $52 saves $1.56, so you pay $50.44.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 52 by 3% gives 53.56 and decreasing it by 3% gives 50.44. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 51.9532, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 52% of 3. 3% of 52 and 52% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 52 ÷ 100 = 1.56), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
