How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 9 = 0.27
- Check: Work backwards: 0.27 ÷ 9 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/9, so part = 3 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.27. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.27 is the 3% share of 9. The remaining 97% is 8.73, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $9 saves $0.27, so you pay $8.73.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 9 by 3% gives 9.27 and decreasing it by 3% gives 8.73. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 8.9919, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 3. 3% of 9 and 9% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.27), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
