How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 150 = 90
  3. Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 150 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/150, so part = 60 × 150 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*150. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

90 is the 60% share of 150. The remaining 40% is 60, and the two parts add back up to 150.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $150 saves $90, so you pay $60.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 150 by 60% gives 240 and decreasing it by 60% gives 60. These do not cancel out: raising 150 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 96, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
