How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 90 = 2.7
- Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 90 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/90, so part = 3 × 90 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.7 is the 3% share of 90. The remaining 97% is 87.3, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $90 saves $2.7, so you pay $87.3.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 90 by 3% gives 92.7 and decreasing it by 3% gives 87.3. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 89.919, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 90% of 3. 3% of 90 and 90% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 90 ÷ 100 = 2.7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
