How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 1 = 0.33
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.33 ÷ 1 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/1, so part = 33 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.33. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.33 is the 33% share of 1. The remaining 67% is 0.67, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $1 saves $0.33, so you pay $0.67.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 1 by 33% gives 1.33 and decreasing it by 33% gives 0.67. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 0.8911, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
