How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 22 = 7.26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.26 ÷ 22 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/22, so part = 33 × 22 ÷ 100 = 7.26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.26 is the 33% share of 22. The remaining 67% is 14.74, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $22 saves $7.26, so you pay $14.74.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 22 by 33% gives 29.26 and decreasing it by 33% gives 14.74. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 19.6042, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
