How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Multiply: 0.05 × 10 = 0.5
- Check: Work backwards: 0.5 ÷ 10 × 100 = 5%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/10, so part = 5 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.5 is the 5% share of 10. The remaining 95% is 9.5, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 5% off an item priced $10 saves $0.5, so you pay $9.5.
Adding and taking away 5%
Increasing 10 by 5% gives 10.5 and decreasing it by 5% gives 9.5. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 9.975, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 5. 5% of 10 and 10% of 5 are always equal (both are 5 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
