How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 35 = 11.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.55 ÷ 35 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/35, so part = 33 × 35 ÷ 100 = 11.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.55 is the 33% share of 35. The remaining 67% is 23.45, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $35 saves $11.55, so you pay $23.45.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 35 by 33% gives 46.55 and decreasing it by 33% gives 23.45. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 31.1885, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
