How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 200 = 120
  3. Check: Work backwards: 120 ÷ 200 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/200, so part = 60 × 200 ÷ 100 = 120. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*200. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

120 is the 60% share of 200. The remaining 40% is 80, and the two parts add back up to 200.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $200 saves $120, so you pay $80.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 200 by 60% gives 320 and decreasing it by 60% gives 80. These do not cancel out: raising 200 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 128, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 200% of 60. 60% of 200 and 200% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 200 ÷ 100 = 120), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
