How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
- Multiply: 0.33 × 8 = 2.64
- Check: Work backwards: 2.64 ÷ 8 × 100 = 33%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/8, so part = 33 × 8 ÷ 100 = 2.64. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =33%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.64 is the 33% share of 8. The remaining 67% is 5.36, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 33% off an item priced $8 saves $2.64, so you pay $5.36.
Adding and taking away 33%
Increasing 8 by 33% gives 10.64 and decreasing it by 33% gives 5.36. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 7.1288, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
