How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 24 = 8.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.4 ÷ 24 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/24, so part = 35 × 24 ÷ 100 = 8.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.4 is the 35% share of 24. The remaining 65% is 15.6, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $24 saves $8.4, so you pay $15.6.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 24 by 35% gives 32.4 and decreasing it by 35% gives 15.6. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 21.06, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
