How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 62 = 21.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.7 ÷ 62 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/62, so part = 35 × 62 ÷ 100 = 21.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*62. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.7 is the 35% share of 62. The remaining 65% is 40.3, and the two parts add back up to 62.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $62 saves $21.7, so you pay $40.3.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 62 by 35% gives 83.7 and decreasing it by 35% gives 40.3. These do not cancel out: raising 62 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 54.405, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
