How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 72 = 25.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.2 ÷ 72 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/72, so part = 35 × 72 ÷ 100 = 25.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.2 is the 35% share of 72. The remaining 65% is 46.8, and the two parts add back up to 72.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $72 saves $25.2, so you pay $46.8.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 72 by 35% gives 97.2 and decreasing it by 35% gives 46.8. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 63.18, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
