How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 2 = 0.78
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.78 ÷ 2 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/2, so part = 39 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.78. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.78 is the 39% share of 2. The remaining 61% is 1.22, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $2 saves $0.78, so you pay $1.22.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 2 by 39% gives 2.78 and decreasing it by 39% gives 1.22. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 1.6958, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
