How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 53 = 2.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.12 ÷ 53 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/53, so part = 4 × 53 ÷ 100 = 2.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.12 is the 4% share of 53. The remaining 96% is 50.88, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $53 saves $2.12, so you pay $50.88.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 53 by 4% gives 55.12 and decreasing it by 4% gives 50.88. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 52.9152, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
