How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 10 = 2.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.5 ÷ 10 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/10, so part = 25 × 10 ÷ 100 = 2.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.5 is the 25% share of 10. The remaining 75% is 7.5, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $10 saves $2.5, so you pay $7.5.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 10 by 25% gives 12.5 and decreasing it by 25% gives 7.5. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 9.375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 25. 25% of 10 and 10% of 25 are always equal (both are 25 × 10 ÷ 100 = 2.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
