How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 57 = 2.28
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.28 ÷ 57 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/57, so part = 4 × 57 ÷ 100 = 2.28. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*57. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.28 is the 4% share of 57. The remaining 96% is 54.72, and the two parts add back up to 57.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $57 saves $2.28, so you pay $54.72.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 57 by 4% gives 59.28 and decreasing it by 4% gives 54.72. These do not cancel out: raising 57 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 56.9088, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
