How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 85 = 3.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.4 ÷ 85 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/85, so part = 4 × 85 ÷ 100 = 3.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.4 is the 4% share of 85. The remaining 96% is 81.6, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $85 saves $3.4, so you pay $81.6.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 85 by 4% gives 88.4 and decreasing it by 4% gives 81.6. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 84.864, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
