How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 12 = 4.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 12 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/12, so part = 40 × 12 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.8 is the 40% share of 12. The remaining 60% is 7.2, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $12 saves $4.8, so you pay $7.2.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 12 by 40% gives 16.8 and decreasing it by 40% gives 7.2. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 10.08, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
