How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 40 = 4.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/40, so part = 12 × 40 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.8 is the 12% share of 40. The remaining 88% is 35.2, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $40 saves $4.8, so you pay $35.2.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 40 by 12% gives 44.8 and decreasing it by 12% gives 35.2. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 39.424, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
