How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 12 = 4.92
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.92 ÷ 12 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/12, so part = 41 × 12 ÷ 100 = 4.92. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.92 is the 41% share of 12. The remaining 59% is 7.08, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $12 saves $4.92, so you pay $7.08.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 12 by 41% gives 16.92 and decreasing it by 41% gives 7.08. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 9.9828, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
