How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 43 = 17.63
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.63 ÷ 43 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/43, so part = 41 × 43 ÷ 100 = 17.63. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.63 is the 41% share of 43. The remaining 59% is 25.37, and the two parts add back up to 43.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $43 saves $17.63, so you pay $25.37.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 43 by 41% gives 60.63 and decreasing it by 41% gives 25.37. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 35.7717, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
