How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 22 = 9.46
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.46 ÷ 22 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/22, so part = 43 × 22 ÷ 100 = 9.46. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.46 is the 43% share of 22. The remaining 57% is 12.54, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $22 saves $9.46, so you pay $12.54.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 22 by 43% gives 31.46 and decreasing it by 43% gives 12.54. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 17.9322, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
