How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 48 = 20.64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.64 ÷ 48 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/48, so part = 43 × 48 ÷ 100 = 20.64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.64 is the 43% share of 48. The remaining 57% is 27.36, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $48 saves $20.64, so you pay $27.36.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 48 by 43% gives 68.64 and decreasing it by 43% gives 27.36. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 39.1248, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
